1973 was a major year in popular music. In March, Pink Floyd released The Dark Side of the Moon and Led Zeppelin released Houses of the Holy. In December, Paul McCartney would release Band on the Run. But in October, two further significant albums were also released: Elton John’s Goodbye Yellow Brick Road and The Who’s overwrought, over-ambitious, and tiring rock opera, Quadrophenia.
