Rationalizing the Star Wars Expanded Universe

There’s an episode of Futurama entitled “The Late Philip J. Fry” where the Professor builds a “forward time machine,” since time travel backwards is a theoretical impossibility. Trapped in the distant future and faced with the inevitable End of the Universe, the trio of the Professor, Fry, and Bender discover that the universe is deterministically cyclical. That is, the Big Crunch leads to another Big Bang that spawns a more or less identical universe with a more or less identical history.
