the original Queen Video, 1981–2016

the original Queen Video [Joanna Adams/Toronto Standard]

Earlier this week, Queen Video, a Toronto icon and one of my childhood haunts, closed its flagship store on 412 Queen Street West after 34 years of business. For casual viewers to film buffs and to academics, Queen Video had everything from popular releases to obscure, rare releases—and especially cult and horror flicks—in its library of over 50,000 titles. Did I forget to mention Queen Video’s kid section? During the late-1980s and early-1990s, my father worked at the Chinese restaurant across the street from Queen Video, and each Saturday I was allowed to pick a video for him to rent from the kid section. Among the films that we rented included the first season of The Transformers in chronological order, Transformers: The Movie, the 1966 The Marvel Super Heroes, Batman (1989), and Superman (1978).

Though Queen Video will remain in business at its Annex location, for those who grew up with it, the end of the original Queen Street West location is the end of a chapter in our city.
