Test Drive: Haiku OS, Sept. 24, 2014

Version: R1 Alpha 4.1

Hardware: Intel P4 (Northwood) @ 2.8 GHz. 2 GB Patriot DDR-SDRAM @ 333 MHz. ECS P4VXASD2+. WD and Seagate hard disks. Cooler Master PSU @ 525 watts max.

Pro:

  • Slick and fluid GUI.
  • Broad driver support.
  • The 2.8 GHz Pentium 4 seemed like overkill for the Haiku OS. So, perhaps Haiku is ideal for very old PCs?

Con:

  • Lack of applications.
  • The WebPositive browser does not support Adobe Flash 10 and above or HTML5, and so it’s useless with YouTube.
  • The Live CD couldn’t detect either NTFS or FAT32 hard drives.

Verdict:

  • Haiku OS is still a work in progress.
