Surprisingly good. Dredd is a gritty, straightforward, and rewarding action film that touches upon post-apocalyptic justice along with fascism and endemic poverty. Interestingly, Dredd passed the “Bechdel test” of gender bias, in that there was at least one scene in Dredd where two women talked about something other than a man. However, if you’re not a fan of stylized, excessive violence a la Frank Miller’s 300 or the character of Judge Dredd, then you should take a pass on this.
Two closing points:
- It’s a shame that there won’t be a sequel.
- Yes, I did miss Sylvester Stallone’s iconic voice and his strenuous 1995 attempts to utter words.
